Consider the Burden of Chronic Kidney Disease–related Anemia

According to the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation:

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Is Now an Epidemic1,2

Prevalence of Earlier-stage CKD Has Risen Sharply*3,4
Severity World Health Organization National Cancer Institute
  Prevalence, % (95% CI) in Cross-sectional Analysis
CKD Stage 1988-1994 (N = 15,488) 1999-2004 (N = 13,233)
1 (GFR ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m2) 1.71 (1.28-2.18) 1.78 (1.35-2.25)
2 (GFR of 60 to 89 mL/min/1.73 m2) 2.70 (2.17-3.24) 3.24 (2.61-3.88)
3 (GFR of 30 to 59 mL/min/1.73 m2) 5.42 (4.89-5.95) 7.69 (7.02-8.36)
4 (GFR of 15 to 29 mL/min/1.73 m2) 0.21 (0.15-0.27) 0.35 (0.5-0.45)
Total 10.03 (9.16-10.91) 13.07 (12.04-14.10)

Adapted from Coresh et al.4
CI = confidence interval; GFR = glomerular filtration rate.

  • Stage 5 CKD is reached when GFR falls below 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 or if patient requires dialysis3

Anemia Is One of the Common Complications of CKD†5

Prevalence of Anemia

Adapted with permission from McClellan et al.5
Hb = hemoglobin.

  • There were 5 times more anemic stage 3 patients than anemic stage 5 patients‡5
  • Other complications of CKD include cardiovascular and bone disease and malnutrition3

*Results from a cross-sectional analysis of the most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey nationally representative surveys of noninstitutionalized adults ≥ 20 years of age (1988-1994 [N = 15,488] and 1999-2004 [N = 13,233]).4

Results from a cross-sectional multicenter survey in patients with CKD (N = 5222).5

When comparing 41.6% of 2832 patients versus 75.5% of 298 patients (see bar chart).
